In 1985 the Czech and Slovak Association established an award bearing the name of Thomas Masaryk, the first president of he Czechoslovak Republic. The award is given for outstanding achievement and for those who make a significant contribution to the cause of a free Czechoslovakia or who have enriched the lives of Czechs and Slovaks in Canada.
At its congress in Calgary in 2000 the Association bestowed the Masaryk Award on the conductor of the Toronto Philharmonia, Maestro Kerry Stratton, for his immense service to music generally and for his unique contribution in the popularisation of Czech music in particular. Kerry Stratton enriches the lives of all of us, not only in this city but far beyond its borders.
